So: my advice is - if you have a possibility to save a picture in JPG with small compression - the file will be smaller but still very good looking. Try to experiment with JPGs and their compression, check the file's size each time.
I know you're using Gimp, but in Photoshop we have "save for web" option, very useful - maybe Gimp has a similar one?
for exp. - please take a look: my files are very big in pixels, 2x as yours, but they load faster - cos they are 2x or more smaller in MB.
I am a webmaster as my job and I deal with web graphics every day, so I thought I might give you this little advice, hope you don't mind. I only wanted to help.
